Essay – The Salem Witch Hunt

Pick one of the following questions and write an essay of 1,000-1,250 words on the subject, with a well-crafted thesis defended with evidence and analysis in the body.

Based on reading the documents, how did the colonists interpret and make sense of extraordinary events and occurrences in their lives, especially in terms of the relationship between the natural and supernatural worlds?

Analyze the trials and their use of evidence. What made the accused women and men seem likely to be witches? What kinds of evidence were offered against the accused and in their defense, and how did conflicts between neighbors figure in these accusations?

Since the accusers, and many of the accused, were women, analyze the role of gender in the witch hunt. What role and effect did the subordinate status of women in New England have on the trials?

Study the role of nonconformity in the witch hunt. What role did it play in the accusations and trials? What kind of people were the accused, and how did they fit (or not) into the larger New England society?

Important note on use of evidence: This essay needs to come primarily from the primary source material (the documents) in the book. This means your paper should avoid the use of material from the Preface and the Introduction, as well as the background and introductions to the sources in the book. Use the documents themselves to support your thesis and arguments.
